Low back · Tennis or lacrosse ball
Side-of-waist ball
Quiet the side of the low back without rolling the spine.
Why we use it
The side waist does extra work when one hip drops. People put a roller on the low back and grind the joints. We use a ball on the side meat, then we make the side-body hold itself.
A ball or roller can briefly turn down guarding and make a joint easier to move. It does not break scar tissue, melt fascia, or diagnose what hurts. The useful window is short — that is why every technique ends with a drill from the program.
Start here
Lie on your side. Ball under the soft tissue between the bottom of the ribs and the top of the pelvis — the side waist, not the spine, not the point of the hip.
How to
- 1Find the space between ribs and pelvis on the side of the body.
- 2Let a little weight onto the ball. Tiny rocks, front to back, not up onto the spine.
- 3Keep the neck long. This is not a side crunch.
- 4Thirty to sixty seconds. Then come off.
- 5Do a short side bridge after.
Feel for
Dull pressure in the side waist. The spine is free. No stab into the low back.
Breathing
Breathe into the side of the ribs. If you cannot, take weight off.
Do this
- — Between ribs and pelvis. Off the spine.
- — The roller never goes here. Ball only.
- — Small rocks.
Common mistakes
- — Sliding the ball onto the lumbar joints.
- — Using a foam roller on the low back.
- — Hiking the shoulder and holding the breath.
Easier · Harder
Easier: Tennis ball. Wall version: stand, ball between the side waist and the wall.
Harder: Lacrosse ball, slightly more weight, still off the spine.
Stop if
Sharp pain in the low back, pain into the groin, or numbness.
Then move: Side Bridge, then Suitcase Carry. Quiet the tissue, then make it hold.
Then do the drill
Side Bridge
Build side-body endurance without grinding the low back.
Suitcase Carry
Stay tall against a weight in one hand, so the collapsing side has nowhere to hide.
