Thoracic spine · Ball or foam roller
Side-of-ribcage roller
Free the side of the ribcage so the shoulder blade can glide instead of hitching.
Why we use it
A lat that stays short parks the shoulder down and forward and steals rotation. Work the side of the ribs — not the armpit nerves, not the low back.
A ball or roller can briefly turn down guarding and make a joint easier to move. It does not break scar tissue, melt fascia, or diagnose what hurts. The useful window is short — that is why every technique ends with a drill from the program.
Start here
Lie on your side. Roller or ball under the side of the ribcage, below the armpit and above the waist.
How to
- 1Park the tool on the side of the ribs, not in the armpit.
- 2Bottom arm can rest overhead or in front. Tiny rocks along the ribs.
- 3The pelvis stays quiet. Do not turn this into a low-back grind.
- 4Breathe into the side ribs. Pause on a sticky rib.
- 5Then thread the needle on hands and knees.
Feel for
Broad pressure along the side ribs. Arm can still hang. No zing into the hand.
Breathing
Breathe into the side you are on. Long breath out.
Do this
- — Ribs, not armpit, not lumbar.
- — Small rocks.
- — If the hand tingles, move down and forward, off the nerve.
Common mistakes
- — Jamming the armpit.
- — Sliding onto the low back.
- — Holding the breath to ‘tough it out.’
Easier · Harder
Easier: Tennis ball against a wall, side of the ribs to the wall.
Harder: Foam roller on the floor, slightly more weight.
Stop if
Tingling in the arm or hand, or pain in the low back.
Then move: Thread the Needle, then Farmer Carry with quiet shoulders.
Then do the drill
Thread the Needle
Reach under the body so the shoulder blade can glide instead of hitching.
Farmer Carry
Stay stacked while you walk with even load — honest core work.
