Why we use it

Life rarely hinges from a perfect parallel stance. Split-stance asks the hips to own the fold when the ground is uneven — so the low back stops finishing every bend under real conditions.

Start here

Stagger your feet — one foot about a half-step ahead, both feet pointed roughly forward. Hold a dowel or broom along your back so it touches the back of your head, mid-back, and sacrum. Soft knees.

How to

  1. 1Stagger your feet — one foot about a half-step ahead, both feet pointed roughly forward.
  2. 2Hold a dowel or broom along your back so it touches the back of your head, mid-back, and sacrum. Soft knees.
  3. 3Fold from the hip sockets as if closing a car door with your hips. The dowel stays quiet on all three points.
  4. 4Stand tall the same way you folded. Switch which foot is forward for the next set.

Feel for

The fold lives in the sockets, not the low back. Front and back legs share the work. The dowel does not peel off your mid-back or sacrum. Pelvis stays level.

Breathing

Easy nose inhale to set. Soft mouth exhale as you fold. Do not hold your breath at the bottom. Soft inhale as you stand.

Do this

  • — Fold from the hip sockets as if closing a car door with your hips. The dowel stays quiet on all three points.
  • — Front and back legs share the work. Pelvis stays level — no hiking one hip to make the hinge.
  • — Stand tall the same way you folded. Switch which foot is forward for the next set.

Common mistakes

  • — Rounding so the dowel leaves the mid-back.
  • — Dumping into the front knee.
  • — Twisting the torso to reach depth.
  • — Making it a stretch instead of a quiet fold.

Regression · Progression

Easier: Shorter stance. Hands on hips without a dowel. Smaller fold.

Harder: Slower 3-sec lower. Light suitcase in the free hand after the pattern is quiet. Longer stance only if the pelvis stays level.
